Updating Firmware
The process of updating firmware on a ProMax these days is a fairly simple matter.
It mostly comes down to being able to communicate to the unit using Device Tool, and selecting the appropriate firmware file.
If you are currently on a Color GUI (firmware 2.x.x or lower) you will want to make sure you have a CPU board that is version G or higher. Do so by following our guide HERE
There's always a chance that a firmware update will not take on a given unit. This is more common on older Color GUIs. Should this be the case, the CPU board should be replaced.
Installing Device Tool
The first step in any firmware update to a ProMax involves getting Device Tool installed on your computer.
First, you have to determine the appropriate version of Device Tool for the firmware and Didapi version you're going to using our compatibility chart HERE
You can find the latest versions of Didapi, Device Tool, and the Imaging package on our Hightail website
Regardless the filepath should be something similar to Software→Device Tool→Windows or Mac. Within this folder, you will find the versions of Device Tool you're looking for.
Obtaining the Firmware for the Update
Getting the firmware file is much the same process as getting Device Tool. Firmware can be downloaded either directly, or in the case of newer firmwares, via an Imaging Package. If the firmware is not available via the Hightail Firmware page, then please download the appropriate Imaging Package
Firmware files themselves will be located under Firmware→ProMax ProTouch or ProMax Color GUI
Obtaining Current Firmware
Finding the current firmware is an important part of updating the firmware, because for some jumps you may want to make an intermediate step in between the current version and the version you are updating to. This is not always necessary, but it's good to know just in case.
In Device Tool select the button for Manage Imaging System
On the next screen verify that each part of the ProMax system is communicating with a green mark next to the Port number. If not verify the IP addresses are correct for each section. Pictured below is the default IP addresses and ports.
Once you have connection in the above picture, then select the tab for Software Configuration. In the below picture you will see the Software Configuration tab, where you can select Get Info for each part of the ProMax in regards to its firmware.
Pushing the Update
Device Tool has changed its look over the years, so it may not look exactly the same as the version you have. Regardless, the general workflow is the same.
1. Press the gear next to “Manage Imaging System”.
2. Choose the “Software Configuration” tab at the top.
3. Choose “Update SW” in the ProMax section, and select the appropriate firmware update.
Once the update is complete, hit “Get info” and see if the firmware version has updated.
If you are updating a ProMax with a v1 ProTouch, this process can take 10-15 minutes.
